Permian had an answer each time Abilene High threatened to change Friday night’s game. The Panthers scored on the ground, through the air and twice by field goal before producing one final touchdown drive to secure a 41-29 victory Sept. 11 at Shotwell Stadium. Permian improved to 3-0.

Permian established control with three different scoring methods

Running back Josh Curry completed an 11-play opening drive with an 8-yard touchdown run. Senior kicker Iker Munoz added the extra point. Senior quarterback Kayden Vickers opened the second quarter with a 62-yard touchdown pass to sophomore receiver Daebreon “Dae Dae” McDowell. Curry’s second touchdown, a 6-yard run, restored Permian’s two-score advantage after Abilene’s first touchdown.

Munoz closed the half with a 41-yard field goal, giving the Panthers a 24-13 lead. He added a 37-yarder in the third quarter for a 27-13 margin before Abilene pulled within seven. The Permian scorers were checked against the current varsity roster and the program’s official game report. The program’s spelling of Daebreon McDowell is used here.

Abilene’s late surge forced Permian to respond

Senior running back Cayden Taylor scored from 5 yards with 9:47 remaining, finishing a 13-play, 72-yard possession and extending the lead to 34-20. A bad snap later resulted in an Abilene safety. The Eagles followed with a 47-yard touchdown pass, cutting Permian’s advantage to 34-29 with 3:19 left.

Instead of trying to protect the five-point margin, Permian drove 51 yards in six plays. Vickers connected with senior Zephaniah Deleon for the clinching touchdown with approximately two minutes remaining. The exact distance and timestamp of that final touchdown differ by one yard and one second between published accounts, so neither disputed figure is used here. Both reports agree on the Vickers-to-Deleon touchdown and its role in producing the 41-29 final.

WHAT TO WATCH

Permian remains unbeaten, but the late bad snap and Abilene’s explosive passing plays offer clear corrections before the Panthers return to Ratliff Stadium.
