Odessa High’s unbeaten start ended in a game that never reached the second half. San Antonio Johnson defeated the Bronchos 37-0 on Sept. 11 at Heroes Stadium. After an hour-long lightning delay at halftime, officials called the game and awarded Johnson the victory. Odessa High fell to 2-1.

Johnson scored with all three phases

The Jaguars opened the scoring on an 11-yard run with 3:45 remaining in the first quarter. Johnson’s defense then produced a safety, extending the margin to 9-0. The Jaguars added a 14-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter.

The game broke open through special teams. Johnson returned a punt 68 yards for a touchdown and returned a blocked punt 31 yards for another score. A 50-yard touchdown pass completed the 37-0 halftime margin.

Field position left the Bronchos without room to recover

Odessa High faced pressure from Johnson’s defense while the two special-teams scores rapidly changed both the field and the scoreboard. The Bronchos never received a second-half opportunity to adjust. Players returned to the field after halftime, but additional lightning forced another stoppage and ultimately ended the game.

WHAT TO WATCH

Punt protection and field position will be immediate priorities. Odessa High must also treat the result in context: the Bronchos were outplayed during the completed half, but severe weather eliminated any opportunity for a normal second-half response.
