San Angelo Central controlled the first half of its homecoming game Friday. The Bobcats could not maintain that control after halftime. Abilene Cooper erased a seven-point deficit and defeated Central 28-21 on Sept. 11 at San Angelo Stadium. The loss dropped the Bobcats to 1-2.

Central’s early offense created a halftime advantage

Senior quarterback Micah Smith connected with senior wide receiver Gavin Johnson for a 9-yard touchdown to open the scoring. Cooper answered with a 24-yard touchdown pass, but junior running back Zeyvion “Zey” Johnson broke a 45-yard touchdown run with 5:38 remaining in the first quarter to restore Central’s seven-point lead.

A late first-quarter fumble gave Cooper another possession, and the Cougars tied the game on a 26-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Lightning briefly cleared the stadium with the score tied at 14. After play resumed, Johnson powered across the goal line from 1 yard, sending Central into halftime ahead 21-14.

The mistakes accumulated after halftime

Cooper scored one rushing touchdown in each of the final two quarters. Central also surrendered field position through a personal-foul penalty immediately after receiving 15 yards from a Cooper unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty. Another Bobcats possession ended with a missed field-goal attempt.

With the score tied at 21 and roughly three minutes remaining, Cooper intercepted Smith while he attempted to fit a pass into a tight window. The Cougars converted the turnover into the go-ahead touchdown. Senior running back Darius Huitt returned the ensuing kickoff to the Central 26. The Bobcats reached fourth down, but Smith’s pass sailed beyond an open Gavin Johnson in the end zone. Cooper then exhausted the remaining time.

The turning point was a sequence, not one snap

Central’s interception was the most immediate late-game swing, but the defeat developed through multiple lost opportunities: the first-quarter fumble, the personal foul, the missed field goal and the inability to finish the final drive. The Bobcats’ first-half rushing success showed what the offense can become when it stays on schedule. The second half demonstrated how quickly penalties and turnovers can erase that advantage.

WHAT TO WATCH

Central must improve its situational execution without losing the explosiveness Johnson and the passing game produced during the first half.
